You may just fall off your seat after seeing today’s utterly unique and magical Pakistani Mehndi party. The uber-creative bride Safa was raised in Woodstock, Ontario (“the dairy capital of Canada!”) and had a “Bollywood Barn” vision for her pre-wedding festivities. The amazing Lemon Truffle Designs brought the bride’s vision to life through bright colours, lush fabrics, marigold garlands, and whimsical paper lanterns.
So… I have to admit that I’ve been obsessed with the bride’s blog My Big Fat Pakistani Wedding for a while now and have been dying to feature her nuptials. Safa is fantastic writer and I love her fashion sense! I had to know more about the inspiration for her big day.
What inspired your Mehndi outfits?
I knew I wanted to look very traditional for my Mehndi (wearing yellow and having my hair in a side braid with flower jewelry). The traditional Pakistani Mehndi colours are yellow and green, but I wanted my colours to be yellow and hot pink. My husband actually found the kurta he was going to wear on the Mehndi before I got my dress and it was a turquoise colour. When I was shopping in Lahore I happened to see a lengha on a mannequin and the skirt was the EXACT same colour as his kurta. I instantly fell in love with the ‘gota’ work, the little mirror accents, the jamawar skirt and the colours. I knew that it would be perfect for my Mehndi dress. I chose the lengha shirt colour to be yellow and the dupatta to be hot pink and I was beyond thrilled with the way it turned out. And, the price was also incredible – 27,000 rupees!
What were your favourite parts of the day?
Peeking from the barn balcony and seeing Saad make his entrance into the barn on a horse! Watching all of my non-desi bridesmaids and boys practice their choreographed Bollywood dances made my heart melt – I was bursting with pride! Saad and I doing our ‘surprise dance’ together! ‘Kikli’ with my brother. The energy, love and vibe in the air felt absolutely magical.
Thank you Safa and Saad for sharing your beautiful Mehndi photos with us!
